Satanic Verses fills in for Salman Rushdie

Jaipur - "It is sad for literature and all of us that we are still in
a state where a writer could be killed just because he comes to a
literary festival," Nigerian author Ben Okri told DNA at the DSC
Jaipur Literature Festival, reacting to Salman Rushdie's decision to
stay away from the event.

"I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and
Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on
their way to Jaipur to 'eliminate' me. While I have some doubts about
the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to
come to the festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my
family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers," Rushdie
said in his statement to the organisers on Friday.

Author Hari Kunzru read out a passage from Rushdie's controversial
book The Satanic Verses. Amitava Kumar, who was on stage with Kunzru,
wondered out loud how Rushdie would react to this reading of his
book.

Kunzru later tweeted that Rushdie's absence from the festival is "a
stain on India's international reputation". There was palpable
indignation among authors at the festival. Okri said it was too bad
that India was still intolerant of different ideas.

Some Muslim groups had earlier called for a ban on his entry to
India. The organisers admitted that they were upset about the way
things panned out. Co-organiser William Dalrymple called the reaction
to Rushdie's book a "tragic game of Chinese whispers", implying that
those taking offence to the book had not understood what it was meant
to be. "But we do have 242 other authors, so go enjoy the festival,"
he said, adding that Rushdie would also participate via video link in
a day or two.

About the terrorist Goon Squad:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
As everyone knows, a goon is a bully or thug who terrorizes or tries
to do away with opposition.

"Myself, Mallu. Yourself?" (V. Bhattathiri) <***@gmail.com>
tries his best to be a bully -- telling others what and when to post,
where to post and where not to post, deliberately publishing lies
about others, stalking and abusing them with hate speech -- but fails
miserably. He is really stressed out, and like his lap dog Prem
Thomas (who currently posts as "P. Rajah" <***@this.com>, and issues
*death threats* to people), is priming himself for conditions such as
stroke and heart disease. Others in the Goon Squad include
Dayashankar M. Joshi "DMJoshi" <***@gmail.com> who displays
unquestioning obedience to Goon Squad thugs, and the instigator who
posts as "Bholu" <***@hotmail.com>

Satanic Verses is really not a good book,
The only reason I bought it was because Iran had such a great
objection to it.
It was not interesting to read and very hard to follow.
I bought The Fortunate Son for about the same reason. The Bush family
used their power to get it off the bookshelves during his 2000
campaign.
It was not ver interesting reading but it did expose G.W. Bush for
what he is,, and allowed me to anticipate his very actions during his
presidency as it was a very accuarate descritpion of his character.
